Highly Recommended: TV-series With Kickass Female Main Characters

Watch-Orphan-Black-Season-2-Episode-1-Online-Nature-Under-Constraint-and-Vexed1

First of all, I am a tv-series addict. Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Suits, Grimm, The Following, Homeland, Game of Thrones, Hannibal, Dexter, Under the Dome, Broadchurch, The Blacklist, The Wire, Six Feet Under, Madmen, Girls, The Carrie Diaries, Sex and the City, Gossip Girl, Boardwalk Empire, o god there are so many series I absolutely adore. Most of the series listed above have male main characters starring in it. I don’t have problems at all watching men having lead roles and women the supporting roles. But I wouldn’t mind seeing more females taking the lead. It would be good for the diversity, because let’s be honest, we need more kickass girls! Here’s my list of great currently running series. Comment if you definitely need to add more to the list.

  • Orphan Black with Tatiana Maslany

This one is for the ones who love a bit of sci-fi drama and aren’t scared of blood and creepy figures. Tatiana plays Sarah Manning in this series. Sarah finds out throughout the episodes she’s not alone, there are some girls that look just like her. Like they are clones.. First episode immediately grabs and pulls you into it. Sarah sees a woman looking exactly like her jumping in front of a train. Still flabbergasted from the suicide she just witnessed, Sarah makes the decision to steal the unknown woman’s stuff to find out what is going on. Maslany’s acting is fenomenal and she won’t disappoint you.

  • Girls with Lena Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet

Girls, finally a series that is based on how true life could really be. Not shown in a harsh dramatic way, but by great comedy sketches. Four twenty somethings known as Hannah (Lena Dunham), who is an aspiring writer gone broke after her parents decided to stop supporting her with money, Marnie (Allison Williams), Hannah’s best friend and a secretary assisant at an art gallery. We also have free spirit Jessa (Jemima Kirke), who flutters through life in NY City and last but not least Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet), Jessa’s little cousin and wannabe Jessa. If you felt you couldn’t relate to Sex and the City (too old) and Gossip Girl (too posh), now your time has come.

  • The Killing with Mireille Enos

American series based upon the Danish television series of Forbrydelsen (which means The Crime). Sarah (Mireille Enos) and Holder (Joel Kinnaman) are two detectives struggling solving a case on the murder of a girl named Rosie Larsen. At first the serie appears to be a bit cold and deliberate, but you have to really get through those first episodes to experience the exceptional acting of Enos, the building tension to an intense climax when the case gets solved. Enos as Sarah is a fierce woman, wearing pullovers, working 24/7 and only eating donuts and smoking sigarettes. When you fancy psychological thriller- dramas you need to see The Killing.

  • Orange is the New Black with Taylor Schilling

We also know Taylor from hitserie The Following as one of The Followers. But that aside, Schilling plays Piper Chapman in this drama, based on true facts. Piper Kerman is actually a real living person who wanted to share her memoirs about her year in a women’s federal prison. This series filled with black humor tells the story of bisexual Piper, sentenced to prison for 15 months, after she transported a suitcase full of drugs to her former lesbian girlfriend and international drug smuggler (who is in prison now too). Piper lived a pretty quiet lifestyle with her husband 10 years prior to the offense at New York’s upper middle class.

  • Game of Thrones with Emilia Clarke

She is the beauty amongst the beasts, I’m obviously talking about Daenarys Targaryen. Mother of Dragons, Khaleesi (queen) of the Dothraki, she is the most beautiful, most fierce and most stylish character in Game of Thrones. Daenarys is the Beyoncé of their world. Maybe you think you aren’t into fantasy dramas, but once you started to watch this show, you’ll never want something else anymore. This show’s starring so many different characters (both female and male) and so many storylines it won’t bore you. With the many characters there’s always one you can relate to.

  1. Do you know Dollhouse? There are only 2 seasons but it was awesome! With a great strong female (faith from buffy) ooh and Buffy the vampire slayer of course! Almost done with breaking bad so black orphan sounds promising. I love Girls by the way.

    • No I don’t actually. I’ll check it out for sure. I’m like in season 1 of breaking bad, but I won’t get further than that.. The lack of suspense I think. But it will get better right?

      • I think it does. Watched it until season 2 or so and then it got too bad for me. Couldn’t handle it. Bit now I really like it. (And I want to see how it ends!)
